Victoria ISD teachers and instructional staff spent the summer sharpening their craft and building the foundation for student success through the district’s Literacy and Numeracy Institutes, held in June and July as part of the implementation of VISD’s new PK–12 instructional frameworks.
These intensive professional learning experiences brought the district’s Literacy and Numeracy Frameworks to life, moving beyond theory and into actionable classroom strategies. Aligned to Priority #1: Exemplary Student Outcomes in the 2025–29 District Strategic Plan, the institutes are a core investment in ensuring high-quality instruction for every student, every day.
Hosted over multiple days, the Literacy and Numeracy Institutes provided grade-level and content-specific sessions focused on helping educators understand, internalize, and begin implementing the newly launched frameworks. Participants engaged in hands-on learning, collaborated with colleagues across campuses, and received direct support from instructional leaders and curriculum specialists. At the conclusion of the institutes, participants were energized and equipped to implement their new learning:
“So many essential pieces of the landscape of literacy were brought together in this training. The scheduling and ordering of components, as well as alignment with The Science of Teaching Reading, Really Great Reading, Literary Elements, Response Skills, and TEKS, were crucial to the success of this district training. I loved the charts and visuals and the seamless way the team worked together to model the skills taught in a fun and engaging way.”
“The Literacy Framework training has opened my eyes to how to effectively teach writing to my students. I also understand the importance of being in accord, so that all students experience a quality education and high levels of learning. Togetherness is the goal.”
“The Numeracy Framework was amazing! I loved getting to see the vertical alignment from Pre-K - 8th grade. It is so important for teachers to know how the TEKS progress so that we can help our students build a solid foundation. I can’t wait to use the POLER problem solving strategy with my students!”
Sessions included curriculum alignment, model lesson walkthroughs, data-informed decision making, and strategies to support differentiated instruction. Educators explored what high-quality literacy and numeracy instruction looks like in action, and how it connects to long-term student achievement.
As teachers prepare for the 2025–26 school year, the impact of the Literacy and Numeracy Institutes will be felt across VISD classrooms. The frameworks emphasize coherence, consistency, and research-based best practices providing a shared language and instructional vision that supports all students in reaching rigorous academic goals.
“I am excited for the alignment and common language we will use as a district. The Literacy Handbook is going to be vital at every step of planning, implementation, and instruction.”
“I feel like the Numeracy Framework is a valuable tool that will help with planning for all grade levels. I was happy to see that manipulatives are not just for teaching at the elementary level! Not having a math background, it was definitely a learning experience. However, I feel that I learned a lot and will be better prepared for lesson planning with my middle school math teachers!”
Educators left the institutes with not only new strategies and aligned resources, but also a stronger sense of purpose and direction. They are now equipped to implement lessons that foster critical thinking, communication, and real-world problem-solving skills—building blocks of excellence in both literacy and numeracy.
The Literacy and Numeracy Frameworks and the summer institutes that supported their rollout represent more than instructional change. They reflect the district’s strategic commitment to its vision: Achieving Excellence for All.
By investing in aligned, high-quality professional learning, Victoria ISD is advancing one of its most critical performance outcomes—developing a strong instructional core that ensures every student achieves exemplary academic outcomes.
As we move into the 2025-2026 school year, the newly developed literacy and numeracy frameworks will serve as the foundation for ensuring VISD achieves our vision of Achieving Excellence for All.
